Nigeria: On the Right of Self-Defence and Protection of National Sovereignty

The Federal Republic of Nigeria reaffirms its unwavering commitment to the purposes and principles of the Charter of the United Nations, in particular the maintenance of international peace and security, the respect for the sovereignty and political independence of all States, and the peaceful settlement of disputes.

Nigeria is a sovereign and independent nation. Our Constitution vests sovereignty in the people of Nigeria and mandates the Government to protect the territorial integrity and independence of our country. This sovereignty—recognised under international law and reaffirmed by our membership in the United Nations, the African Union, and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS)—is inviolable.

The Government of Nigeria has observed with grave concern recent statements and actions that amount to a threat of aggression and possible violation of our territorial integrity. We remind all States that any such threat or use of force contravenes Article 2(4) of the Charter of the United Nations, which prohibits the use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any Member State.

Nigeria remains committed to peace, dialogue, and cooperation. Our preference has always been to resolve disagreements through diplomatic and peaceful means, consistent with Chapter VI of the Charter concerning the pacific settlement of disputes.

However, in accordance with Article 51 of the Charter of the United Nations, Nigeria affirms its inherent right of individual and collective self-defence should an armed attack occur against our territory, our people, or our interests. This right is not granted by the Charter—it is inherent and exists as a natural extension of sovereignty itself.

Should our sovereignty be threatened or violated, the Federal Republic of Nigeria will take all necessary and proportionate measures to defend our nation, protect our citizens, and restore peace and security, while acting fully in compliance with international law. Such measures will be reported promptly to the United Nations Security Council as required by the Charter.

Nigeria also calls upon our regional partners within the African Union and ECOWAS to reaffirm their collective commitment to the principles of non-aggression, mutual assistance in defence, and the sanctity of borders inherited at independence—principles which underpin stability and peace on our continent.

We urge all nations to respect the sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity of every African State, and to work together for a continent and a world governed not by the threat or use of force, but by law, mutual respect, and cooperation.

In defending itself, Nigeria defends not only its own independence but the principles upon which the United Nations was founded. Our resolve for peace should never be mistaken for weakness; our commitment to dialogue should never be seen as the abdication of our right to self-defence.

Nigeria stands ready to cooperate with the United Nations, the African Union, and ECOWAS in all efforts to prevent conflict, de-escalate tensions, and preserve international peace and security. But let it be clear: our sovereignty is non-negotiable, our borders are sacrosanct, and our determination to defend them is absolute.

My Edge,

The CNN post below sums up all what the Nigerian people and Government are trying to say. We as Nigerians will not cower in the face of aggression and threats nor will we be bullied into excepting Americans views, its highly undemocratic for any president to threaten a sovereign nation on baseless claims that are neither base on facts or any iota of truth.

This propaganda machination against Nigeria will not work, where are all our friends and allies across the globe why is no one speaking up in defence of Nigeria, has America bullied everyone into silence. Has everyone forgotten so soon when a US Senator (Rep Perry) confirmed United State funding terrorist groups in Nigeria via USAID and the refusal of the Obama Administration to sell us weapons to combat the terrorism they sponsored.

I think it’s time for Nigeria to start our own home grown nuclear program because we cannot be in a position like this ever again when country can just wake up and decide to invade us….  No way and the international community is quiet?

I want to lend my voice, my post, my tweet to the patriotic Nigerians who have been speaking up @BwalaDaniel @seunokin @Onsogbu @abdullahayofel @SpoxCHN_MaoNing @abati1990 @renoomokri @realFFK @ruffydfire @Symply_Tacha and many more, GOD Bless you all.

  1. I don’t understand why the United Kingdom has not come out to condemn America because Nigeria is still under the Commonwealth and there are several Nigerian companies and also Nigerian people that are working in the United Kingdom and supporting the British economy with resources that have been traded and taken from Nigeria.
