Edge's News: UK police release suspect under investigation over murder of teacher

The 28-year-old was discovered in Cator Park in Kidbrooke by a member of the public on Saturday 18 September.

Police believe she was attacked shortly after leaving her home in nearby Astell Road at about 20:30 BST the previous evening. Officers have released an image of another man they wish to speak to.

He is shown on CCTV walking through Pegler Square, where a vigil, organised by a Kidbrooke community group, is to be held for Ms Nessa later. Police said they would be part of the gathering.

An "extensive trawl" of CCTV in the area is ongoing as information on the man's identity and whereabouts could be "vital" to the investigation, police said.

British police said on Friday they had released under investigation a man held over the murder of a teacher in a London park last week that has provoked an outburst of public grief and anger over the issue of violence against women.

Sabina Nessa, 28, left her home in south London on the evening of Sept. 17 to make the short walk through a local park to a bar where she was due to meet a friend. She never arrived and her body was found in the park the next afternoon.

Vigils are planned both in the local area and across Britain later on Friday evening, both to remember Nessa and to highlight violence against women.

The Metropolitan Police said they had released a 38-year-old man who had been arrested at an address in nearby Lewisham on Thursday but that he remained under investigation and could still be taken back into detention.

The police on Thursday also released pictures taken from security TV footage of a man and a vehicle, appealing to anyone who recognised either to make immediate contact, and on Friday thanked the public for their response to the appeal.

"We are now a week on from Sabina’s murder and while we have made good progress with our investigation we must keep this appeal for information going and encourage anyone who has any information to come forward," Met Detective Chief Inspector Neil John said.

A post-mortem carried out on Monday was inconclusive, police said.

The prime minister tweeted a photo of the door to 10 Downing Street with a lit candle on the doorstep, saying he will be thinking of Ms Nessa's friends and family tonight as people come together to pay their respects on Friday evening.

"We will do everything we can to prevent these abhorrent crimes and make our streets safer," he added.

Halima Begum, chief executive of the Runnymede Trust race equality think tank, said Ms Nessa was "a beautiful, intelligent young woman who had so much life to live".

Ms Begum, whose family knew Ms Nessa, said: "Speaking as a woman and a Londoner from the city's Bangladeshi community, I'm heartbroken.

"Sabina is related to members of my extended family and everything I know about her speaks of a beautiful, intelligent young woman who had so much life to live, and so, so much to offer in terms of making a positive difference to the people's lives she touched, not least her family's and the young children she taught at school."

Ms Begum urged everyone attending a memorial event on Friday for Ms Nessa to "take care this evening, solidarity to yourself and women across London and the UK - all we can do is hope for no more horrendous instances like this, and the countless others these past few months".
