Edge's News: Biden announces new sanctions against Russia..

Image
President Joe Biden announced new sanctions against Russia on Tuesday, warning that President Vladimir Putin's actions in Ukraine this week amounted to "the beginning of a Russian invasion." “We still believe that Russia is poised to go much further and launch a massive military attack against Ukraine,” Biden said in remarks at the White House. “As Russia contemplates this next move, we have our next move prepared as well,” the president added. “Russia will pay an even steeper price if it continues its aggression, including additional sanctions.” The sanctions announced Tuesday target large Russian financial institutions and Moscow’s sovereign debt, cutting the country off from Western financing. They also focus on five Russian elites with close ties to the Kremlin, but do not go after Putin directly. Several U.S. allies including the European Union, Canada, Germany, Britain, Australia and Japan, announced they would also impose sanctions on Russia af...

That’s the simple conclusion I can reach. If it worked for six years and you didn’t have that glitch, case of adulterated fuel coming into the country.  “Recall that under the military, particularly under the regime of general Sani Abacha, we had cases of adulterated fuel. We had this case under General Sani Abacha,” Mr Adesina said. “It happened (Under Abacha). Whether long or short, the point is glitches do happen and the country must learn from it,” the spokesman insisted when probed further. Why is it that no one in the current administration ever takes responsibility for their actions? From the inception of this administration, the principal had al...

Edge's News: Britain to hit Russia hard with sanction - PM Boris Johnson

Image
Britain will immediately impose hard economic sanctions on Russia after President Vladimir Putin ordered the deployment of troops to two breakaway regions in eastern Ukraine, Prime Minister Boris Johnson said on Tuesday. A Reuters witness saw tanks and other military hardware moving through the separatist-controlled city of Donetsk after Putin formally recognised the breakaway regions and ordered the deployment of Russian forces to "keep the peace". "We will immediately institute a package of economic sanctions," Johnson told reporters. "This is, I should stress, just the first barrage of UK economic sanctions against Russia, because we expect I'm afraid that there is more Russian irrational behaviour to come." Johnson said he would set out the sanctions in the House of Commons, probably at around 1230 GMT. The sanctions, Johnson said, would be "targeted not just at entities in Donbass and Luhansk and Donetsk, but in Russia itself - targe...

Edge's News: Russia-Ukraine, Why Putin recognised separatist-held regions

Image
The tense standoff between Russia, and Ukraine and Western governments sharply escalated on Monday night as Russian President Vladimir Putin recognised two breakaway regions held in eastern Ukraine by pro-Russian rebels as independent states and ordered troops into the territories. Putin Televise Speech: I deem it necessary to make a decision that should have been made a long time ago – to immediately recognise the independence and sovereignty of the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) and the Luhansk People’s Republic (LNR),” he said in a televised speech. The move was condemned by Western countries at a marathon meeting of the United Nations Security Council, during which many speakers raised an alarm of a Russian invasion into Ukraine. Edge's News: Oil inches closer to $100 as Russia-Ukraine tensions gets real...

Image
Oil jumped as simmering geopolitical tensions between Russia and Ukraine kept the market on edge and volatility high. West Texas Intermediate surged above $95 a barrel for the first time since 2014. Russia could take offensive military action or attempt to spark a conflict inside Ukraine as early as this week, National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said Friday.  Russia has repeatedly denied it plans to invade and its foreign minister said he would propose to continue diplomatic engagements with the West. A potential Russian invasion of Ukraine could not only disrupt crude supplies but also potentially spark retaliatory sanctions by the U.S. Oil prices have soared in recent weeks on speculation that demand will outpace supply as the global economy rebounds from the pandemic. “With a lack of clarity on the effect on oil and incredibly low inventories, the market is definitely worried here and buying,” said Scott Shelton, energy specialist at ICAP. While crude has b...

Edge's News: Governor Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State to build N49 billion medical park...

Image
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration says plans are ongoing to develop a medical park to make the state a medical tourism hub. Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat announced this on Sunday at the Duchess Royal Medical Check-Up unveiling in collaboration with Lagos Marriott Hotel at Ikeja. The medical outfit is an exclusive three-day comprehensive total body health screening and wellness programme. Mr Hamzat said the Lagos government would continue to commit funding to the health sector and ensure universal health coverage for which quality would be an essential component. “The health sector in our country has over the years struggled to ensure quality in the delivery of health care services. The effect of this, apparently, has led to the mistrust of the population in health service delivery in the country,” said the deputy governor.  This mistrust opened a whole new market for medical tourism, which is also called health tourism and basically refers to international trav...

A representative for the singer declined to comment on whether other members of the tour have also tested positive for the coronavirus, but the statement about his performance on Sunday being rescheduled did start off by saying it was because of a Covid outbreak within “the team.” Mr. Bieber’s tour, called Justice in Action, had been previously delayed b...

Edge's News: All remaining Covid rules to be lifted on ‘Freedom Day’ - UK PM Boris Johnson...

Image
Boris Johnson is preparing to lift the remaining Covid-19 restrictions once and for all from Thursday. Even though hundreds of people are dying with the virus every week, the prime minister intends to end the legal requirement for self-isolation as part of his ‘living with Covid’ plan for England. Alongside this, he said ‘we will be testing at a much lower level’, adding ‘we don’t need to keep spending at a rate of £2 billion a month’. In an interview with the BBC, the Tory leader admitted ‘Covid remains a dangerous disease’, but added: ‘We have reached a stage where we think you can shift the balance away from state mandation, away from banning certain courses of action, and compelling certain courses of action, in favour of encouraging personal responsibility.’ Local authorities will also be required to manage outbreaks on their own with pre-existing public health powers, as they would with other diseases. Free lateral flow and PCR tests will also be scrapped, alo...

Edge's News: Queen Elizabeth II of United Kingdom tests positive for COVID

Image
Queen Elizabeth II tested positive for COVID-19 on Sunday and is experiencing mild, cold-like symptoms, Buckingham Palace said, adding that she still plans to carry on working. The diagnosis prompted concern and get-well wishes from across Britain’s political spectrum for the famously stoic 95-year-old. Britain’s longest-reigning monarch and a fixture in the life of the nation, the queen reached the milestone of 70 years on the throne on Feb. 6, the anniversary of the 1952 death of her father, King George VI. She will turn 96 on April 21. The palace said the queen, who has been fully vaccinated and had a booster shot, would continue with “light” duties at Windsor Castle over the coming week. “She will continue to receive medical attention and will follow all the appropriate guidelines,” the palace said in a statement. People in the U.K. who test positive for COVID-19 are now required to self-isolate for at least five days, although the British government says...

Edge's News: Russia gives final order for Invasion - US claims...

Image
Russia on Sunday rescinded earlier pledges to pull tens of thousands of its troops back from Ukraine’s northern border, a move that U.S. leaders said put Russia another step closer to what they said was the planned invasion of Ukraine. Residents of Ukraine’s capital filled a gold-domed cathedral to pray for peace. Russia’s action extends what it said were military exercises, originally set to end Sunday, that brought an estimated 30,000 Russian forces to Belarus, Ukraine’s neighbour to the north. They are among at least 150,000 Russian troops now deployed outside Ukraine’s borders, along with tanks, warplanes, artillery and other war materiel. The continued deployment of the Russian forces in Belarus raised concern that they could be used to sweep down on the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, a city of about 3 million people less than a three-hour drive away. In Kyiv, life outwardly continued as usual for many on a mild winter Sunday, with brunches and church services, ahead of what U....
