Edge's News: The Queen black hair in new Platinum Jubilee portrait

Image
Most of artist Oluwole Omofemi portraits depict African women, for whom hair is a key part of their identity. The Queen has been given a bold halo of black hair by a Nigerian artist in a new portrait.  The painting, by artist Oluwole Omofemi, was commissioned for a special collector’s edition of Tatler magazine to celebrate the Platinum Jubilee. It will go on public display at Sotheby’s in London as part of the auction house’s jubilee season, sitting alongside portraits of each of the seven queens regnant of Britain, including the iconic Armada Portrait of Elizabeth I, on loan from the Woburn Abbey collection. For him, it is “an artistic metaphor for freedom and power” and he deliberately depicted the monarch with what the magazine described as “a bold halo of black hair.” 'When I look at the Queen, I see someone who has conquered life' Mr Omofemi said: “Many of the great things the Queen achieved came at a very young age, so I have painted her with black hair. “I also...

Edge's News: Nigerian airlines prices keeps going up

Image
Two major domestic airlines in Nigeria have increased the price of local flights from a baseline of 50,000 Naira ($120) for economy seats to as much as N58,000 ($139) this week, signalling the industry’s effort to manage an aviation fuel scarcity spanning months. The airlines threatened to suspend operations last week Monday (May 9) citing increasing cost of operations, but appeared to reach a temporary agreement with sellers of the fuel to buy at a fixed rate, with the intervention of federal lawmakers. For a few days after, N50,000 remained the base fare for prices. But that has started changing this week with more than 10% increases in some cases, checks for the popular Lagos to Abuja route showed. Among the airlines to raise prices are Air Peace, and Ibom Air, the market leaders. Flight ticket prices have been shooting up in Nigeria since February when airlines doubled prices from what used to be a N23,000 ($55) baseline. Now as then, the pretext was the rising cost of jet fu...

Edge's News: Attacks on Comedians the rise of The Will Smith’s idiocy… 'Beginning of the End for Comedy…

Image
The America's Got Talent judge H owie Mandel   says "Chappelle getting physically attacked on stage is his "worst fear come true." Is comedy under attack, or just comedians? Are we too thin-skinned and sensitive as a society now to handle humour? Or should comedians figure out how to adapt? It's an impossible question that's only gotten more and more complicated in recent weeks as comedians have gone from getting canceled for off-colour jokes and having people protest them to actually getting physically assaulted on stage while plying their trade. Obviously, the highest-profile incident of this came when Will Smith walked up to Chris Rock on live television during the Oscars and smacked Chris Rock across the face for cracking a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith's hair. "I thought that that opened the flood gates," Howie Mandel told E! News about that Oscars slap. And then, Dave Chappelle got tackled on stage b...

Edge's News: If Roe vs Wade is repeal…what happens to abortion rights and the freedom of Choice

Image
The abortion debate, though universal, is also quintessentially American. Over the past 50 years, it has come to represent the increasingly vitriolic culture wars dominating US politics. The temperature is again super hot after a leaked memo revealed that the US Supreme Court is set to repeal the 1973 landmark Roe v. Wade decision that legalised abortion nationwide. Late Monday, POLITICO released a draft decision written by Justice Samuel Alito – a staunch conservative judge appointed in 2005 by George W. Bush – that outlines the court’s intention to gut Roe, which allows abortions up until the point of viability outside the womb. It is still unclear who leaked the draft memo, but the Supreme Court says it is investigating, which is a remarkable admission for the notoriously tight-lipped institution. In the leaked decision, responding to a Mississippi law banning the procedure after 15 weeks gestation, Justice Alito writes that “Roe was egregiousl...
