Bill Cosby to be freed from prison after court tosses sexual assault conviction

Image
Pennsylvania's highest court on Wednesday overturned Bill Cosby's sexual assault conviction and ordered him freed from prison immediately, saying he never should have faced charges after striking a non-prosecution deal with a previous district attorney more than 15 years ago. The split decision by the Pennsylvania Supreme Court came after Cosby had served more than two years of a potential three- to 10-year sentence in a state prison following his 2018 conviction. Cosby, 83, could be released as soon as Wednesday afternoon from a state correctional facility in Shippack, Pennsylvania. The comedian and actor was best known for his role as the lovable husband and father in the 1980s television comedy series "The Cosby Show," earning him the nickname "America's Dad." But his family-friendly reputation was shattered after dozens of women accused him of sexual assault over a period of decades. His conviction was widely seen as a watershed moment in the #MeTo...

COVID: New phase of pandemic outbreak in Australia

Image
Australian leaders will hold an emergency meeting on Monday after a spike in Covid infections. An outbreak in Sydney linked to the highly contagious Delta variant has grown to 128 cases. Cases have also been recorded in the Northern Territory, Queensland and Western Australia. Officials say it is a "critical time" for the country, which has kept case numbers low with border closures and lockdowns. This is the first time in months that cases have emerged in multiple parts of the country at the same time.  "I think we're entering a new phase of this pandemic, with the more contagious Delta strain," Treasurer Josh Frydenberg told ABC News on Monday. The escalation in Covid infections has prompted lockdowns in the cities of Sydney and Darwin, as well as restrictions across four states. The situation remains most concerning in Sydney, where some five million residents are subject to a stay-at-home order. The New South Wales (NSW) state government on Sunday expan...

This includes collecting taxes on the Nigerian income of global tech giants with significant economic presence here, even if they have not established an office or permanent establishment, and are currently not paying taxes in Nigeria" the VP said. In this regard, Section 4 of the Finance Act 2019, provides that the Finance Minister, may by order of the President, determine what constitutes the significant economic p...

Matt Hancock saga continues: UK Government rages over CCTV Leakage

Image
The Government was on Sunday under pressure to order an urgent Whitehall security review – including a sweep for bugs in all ministerial offices – as an investigation got underway into the leaking of footage showing Matt Hancock embracing an aide. Some three days after the images were first published, the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) confirmed it is conducting an internal inquiry into the disclosure of the video from a camera in the former Health Secretary’s private office inside the ministry’s Westminster building.  There are conflicting accounts of whether or not the CCTV device trained on the door of Mr Hancock’s office was mounted in clear view on the ceiling or hidden in a smoke detector, with friends of the minister insisting he was unaware of the camera. As several former ministers expressed alarm at the existence of cameras in ministerial offices, officials in the department ordered that the camera be located and deactivated prior to the arrival of new min...
